once upon a time a boy saw a girl.  he asked her to go get lime bars.  she said yes.  he was a viking and she was dutch.  but this didn’t stop them.  eventually they fell in love, got married, became the H’s, bought a house in the mountains and had a little dutch-viking hybrid.

then they decided that some sort of modern narritive of life in general [l.i.g], preferably in the digital format, may be in order.

(little dutch-viking hybrids tend to make these things necessary.)

so here is an attempt to capture l.i.g in all it’s wonderful, wild, blessed, busy, changing, challenging gusto.

Content.

Peaceful contentment:

Contentment, from The Valley of Vision

Heavenly Father,

If I should suffer need, and go unclothed, and be in poverty,
make my heart prize thy love,
know it, be constrained by it,
though I be denied all blessings.
It is thy mercy to afflict and try me with wants,
for by these trials I see my sins,
  and desire severance from them.
Let me willingly accept misery, sorrows, temptations,
if I can thereby feel sin as the greatest evil,
and be delivered from it with gratitude to thee,
acknowledging this as the highest testimony of thy love.
When thy Son, Jesus, came into my soul
instead of sin, he became more dear to me
  than sin had formerly been;
his kindly rule replaced sin's tyranny.
Teach me to believe that if ever I would have any sin subdued
I must not only labour to overcome it,
but must invite Christ to abide in the place of it,
  and he must become to me more than vile lust had been;
that his sweetness, power, life may be there.
Thus I must seek a grace from him contrary to sin, but must not claim it apart from himself.
When I am afraid of evils to come, comfort me by showing me
that in myself I am a dying, condemned wretch,
  but in Christ I am reconciled and live;
that in my self I find insufficiency and no rest,
  but in Christ there is satisfaction and peace;
that in myself I am feeble and unable to do good,
but in Christ I have ability to do all things.
Though now I have his graces in part,
I shall shortly have them perfectly
in that state where thou wilt show thyself
  fully reconciled,
  and alone sufficient, efficient,
  loving me completely,
  with sin abolished.
O Lord, hasten that day.

Bliss thy name is sleep

Just thought I'd give an Aida update :)  She turned 5 months old last Wednesday - so hard to believe!  We've had a few new babies at church the last couple of weeks and I can not believe that she used to be that tiny!

Aida's newest and very exciting skill (esp. for Mom and Dad) is that she is almost sleeping through the night - YAY!  She was a very decent sleeper from birth to 3 months, but at that point we started a slow digression in her ability to sleep for long periods during the night.  The culmination of this was around the 4.5 month mark and I will not even put a number on the times she was getting up because it's too big (and therefore depressing).  Initially I thought she just needed to eat more because of growth spurts etc....until I realized she could go 4 hours during the day between meals, so there was no way she was needing to eat every 2.5 hours (or less) at night.  What to do, what to do.....

I had read a couple of the "major" sleep training/baby schedule books (Baby Wise and Sears), and although helpful/informative on different points, neither really resonated with me as a great fit for our lifestyle and priorities when it came to parenting.  Both were too extreme on opposite ends of the spectrum.  At the 4.5 month mark, I picked up Weissbluth's book "Health Sleep Habits, Happy Child", and I have to say, I definitely recommend it over the other two.   In my opinion, it road the middle ground in terms of the previously mentioned books.  Weissbluth is an MD and started a sleep research center for infants and children at Northwest University. I learned a lot about the biological function and maturation of sleep habits and what (generally) can be expected at different ages.  His ideas, solutions and scheduling suggestions were simple and straight forward, which I really appreciated.

Here's what changed:
Bedtime:  Was 8:30 - 9pm; now is 7:15pm
Routine: Was pretty much nothing; now it starts at about 6:15-30pm with dinner (solids), bath, PJs, cuddle, nurse and into bed.
Our response to waking:  I used to jump up at every whimper; now it's nothing unless it's time to eat (usually between 4am - 5am).  Obviously that will be modified for sickness etc ;)

All these changes were recommended by Weissbluth and it sounds simple (and obvious), right?  Well, it was and it worked.  The first night Aida cried for maybe 25 minutes, which wasn't the most fun for her or us, but then slept straight through except for 2 feedings.  She eliminated the first night feeding on her own after the second night and in the last 3 weeks of the new "routine", she has fussed during the night just a handful of times.  PTL!

I haven't followed W's recommendation for nap times quite as closely.  Although the basics hold true for us (nap times around 9am and 1pm), sometimes her ability to sleep for a longer (1+ hour) time is an issue.  CIO during the day has yet to be successful and to be honest, it just makes me too sad.  So we just work with general time frames during the day and go with the flow.  If she wakes after 40 minutes and is happy we play and eat.  Then we grab a bit more sleep on a walk in the Bjorn.  As long as she gets one "good" nap (~1.5 hours) in her crib plus a few shorties, I'm happy and so is she :)

Aida has always been mellow and sweet, but both Peter and I have seen a marked difference since her nights have improved and enjoy our time together even more! Mom is also re-"learning" (seriously!) how to get 8+ hours a night with only one waking and it is a. ma. zing. :)
Words can not express how much I love walking into this face in the morning :)

Happy spring-y day!  Just thought I'd share some family pics that we took on Sunday.  I ironed coordinating clothes and everything.  That's it for now, it's too beautiful outside to spend much time on the computer....

There's nothing like watching a Daddy with his baby girl :)

I'll just leave you with these words of truth from David...

"But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.  I will sing to the Lord because he has dealt bountifully with me."
Ps. 13:5-6

He has risen indeed!

We had a wonderful Easter celebration yesterday here in sunny COS!  Worship at FRAC was a joyful celebration of our resurrected Lord who conquered death that we might live in justified relationship with Him - praise the Lord!  Church was followed by a yummy brunch at Ben and Lyd's house.  I wish all holiday meals consisted of breakfast foods. That would be pure bliss.  Not so much for my waistline.

Peter's parents are getting ready to sell their house in MS and we decided about a month ago that it would be great if he could go down and help them get things ready.  However, in the midst of the craziness that was March, we overlooked that fact that he had scheduled the ticket for Easter weekend.  Whoops.  So, Aida and Mommy spent Easter without Daddy.  A little sad, but we're glad he was able to do so much around his childhood home in Gulfport to help out!  And we are looking forward to his return tonight!  Yay!

Here are some pictures of our favorite little Easter bunny:

Hugs!
Afternoon cuddle time with Mommy :)

Mmmmm, I LOVE my fingers!

Fruit Pizza with Pretzle Crust

  • Here is a yummy dessert I made while in Cincinnati for some of my friends.  Sweet and salty + chocolate + fruit = addicting :)

Crust:
  • 3 cups finely crushed pretzels
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups cold butter or margarine

In a bowl, combine pretzels and sugar; mix well. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press into a 9 x 14-in. pizza pan. Bake at 375 degrees F for 8-10 minutes or until set. Cool on a wire rack; refrigerate for 30 minutes. (NOTE: It's a bit hard to predict the saltiness of the crust using regular pretzels.  Buying unsalted pretzels and adding coarse salt to taste gives you more control).

Frosting:
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

  • In double boiler melt chips and add heavy cream, mix until smooth take off of heat.  In mixing bowl cream together sugar and cream cheese until smooth, slowly add chocolate mixture. Mixture will thicken up as the chocolate cools.

Topping:
Any fruit you want!  I like fresh berries :)

Sauce:
Frozen raspberries
Sugar to taste
1 -1 1/2 c. Water

Sorry, the quantities are a bit vague because I just eyeball it :)  Puree desired amount of raspberries while frozen. Add enough water to make a nice thin mixture.  Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer.  Add sugar as mixture cooks till desired sweetness is reached.  Simmer about 15 minutes, till thickened.  Sauce will thicken more as it cools.

After crust is cooled, top with frosting.  I add the berries and sauce to individual slices because leftovers will become soggy overnight if you do it all at once.  Whipped cream would be good too :)

Next time I make this I think I am going to experiment with a cookie layer, maybe brownies or blond brownies, for an extra strata of yumminess.  And more calories.  Of course.

Enjoy!

Good Friday

"And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, 'My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.'"
Matthew 26:39

"....But the obedient Son's plea to his loving Father is met with silence.  Why?

Listen to this verse for the very first time: For God so loved the world....that he's silent at this moment when his Son appeals for an alternative.

This is what bearing our sin means to him - utter distress of soul as he confronts total abandonment and absolute wrath from his Father on the cross, a distress and an abandonment and a rejection we cannot begin to grasp.

In this, our Savior's darkest hour...do you recognize his love for you?

'Yet not what I will, but what you will'"

Cinci Spring

Aida and I just got back from a wonderful whirlwind trip to Cincinnati.  We had a blast spending lots of time with family and several dinner/coffee dates with friends! Aida was a champion traveler both ways, for which I was very thankful.  Amazing discovery made one trip too late:  baby gear (strollers and care seats) are checked for FREE.  It was so nice having a lighter load to tote through the terminal and made security infinitely less painful for me and the people behind me :)

We were spoiled by lots of Oma, Opa, Aunt L and Uncle K loving, cooking, trips to the zoo and night-time relief during a few rough sleeps.  I am so thankful for my family and love every second I get to spend with them.  I love the comfy, settled feeling I get coming back to my "original" home - thanks for the fun week, Mom and Dad!   We really missed Peter though and were so happy to be reunited with him in DIA.  We had a yummy dinner at Pappadeaux to celebrate being back to together :)

When we got home, I greeted by a new hall configuration, drywall, kitchen cabinets, lights, hardwoods and appliances - beeeeeea-u-ti-ful!  Peter and Luke worked pretty much around the clock while we were gone and I am so so so grateful!  Soon I'll be able to post pics of the finished product, yay!
